Facebook introduces Twitter-esque ‘clickable hashtags’

Facebook has announced it will introduce clickable Twitter-esque hastags in a bid to engage its users in wider conversations around specific subjects.

The move effectively sees Facebook attempting to move in on a space within the social media sphere that was originally the domain of Twitter by letting its users engage with others while referencing events.

Clicking on the hashtags will take users to pages that resemble the existing News Feeds, but pull in comments from others on Facebook into one conversation. It will also allow people to cross-reference Twitter hastags on Facebook and import posts with greater richness.

Referencing rival social media platforms, including Twitter and Instagram, the company said: ‘To date there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about [on Facebook].
